The WWW or simply the Web or W3 is the natural habitat of Websites, it is where web sites live. The WWW was invented for Websites.

Tinkering with a real live website can be problematic; a simple mistake could break the site with consequences ranging from irritation, through embarrassment to downright catastrophe.

Experimentation should be carried out in a safe forgiving environment where mistakes can be made at zero risk. This is where WAMP & LAMP come in.

WAMP is an acronym for: Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP
LAMP is an acronym for: Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP

WAMP & LAMP are open source enterprise stacks which put a private Web Server on your personal computer; WAMP puts a Webserver on your PC while LAMP provides the same service for Linux and Unix boxes or even a Rasberry PI.

Apache is the most widely used web server software on the planet, it is free open source software and runs on 67% of all webservers in the world. Apache is fast, reliable, and secure.

MySQL is an open source relational database management system (RDBMS) based on Structured Query Language (SQL). MySQL runs on virtually all platforms, including Linux, UNIX, and Windows.

PHP is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.  PHP is a recursive acronym for Hypertext PreProcessor.

The WAMP & LAMP stacks are completely free and designed to be installed by non specialist users.
